TWO of Wotton-under-Edge's community groups have warned Tesco they will face a boycott if they do not find a new location for the post office before the store is converted.
Last week Tesco announced it was working towards a "seamless" relocation of the post office from April 20, with the One Stop Shop closing for conversion to a Tesco Express on April 23.
At a joint meeting of Wotton Civic Society and Wotton Historical Society on Friday, the impending closure was discussed.
Civic society chairman John Forster said: "Because of the seriousness of the situation, the general consensus of opinion was that, if Tesco insisted on closing the post office in their store on April 20, without it first having been relocated and up and running in other premises, then those at that meeting would boycott the Tesco store in future and encourage others in the town to do the same."
Mr Forster urged residents of Wotton to write to the supermarket chain to make it aware of the proposed boycott and warn that the people of Wotton would not be a soft option or a pushover.
And they were not prepared to stand by and see the post office "closed by the actions of a corporation which relied on the goodwill of their customers for the continued existence of their store".
Mr Forster urged people to write to Tesco about how they feel and what they are prepared to do.
"It is no good wringing your hands and complaining if it all goes wrong and we end up without a post office in the town, if you have not even bothered to put pen to paper," he stated.
"All too often people complain of a problem but do nothing about it. Don't be one of them. The answer lies with us, the people of Wotton. It is no longer: "What are they doing about it?" It is more: "What are we doing about it?"
