SIR - I write in response to the unfair criticism in Mrs S Alvis' letter (Can't they pick a local candidate? Gazette, December 24) on the selection of Dr Peter Hirst as the Liberal Democrat prospective Parliamentary candidate to fight the Stroud constituency at the next General Election.

We have an excellent chance of gaining the seat in view of our well-received policies of which axing the council tax, opposing ID cards and our stance on Iraq are three.

Might we also remind the electorate that we have excellent MPs in the neighbouring constituencies of Cheltenham, Bath and Northavon.

Selecting Peter would add to our strength in this area and his election would provide a further hard working MP to help implement Liberal Democrat policies at Westminster.

As with any other organisation making a selection for such a key position, we required the very best person we could find. We required a combination of unique qualities and abilities.

Peter Hirst met these requirements and he was fairly selected as the best person for the position. This was not based on birthplace or location but on his qualities, intelligence and ability to do the job required.
