HUNDREDS of people attended a re-enactment event at Berkeley Castle at the weekend.
A 'skirmish' from the American Civil War was staged on Bank Holiday Monday by members of the South Homesteaders, from Wolverhampton, who were joined by a group of historical event performers from Cardiff.
Prior to the battle through the weekend a wide variety of displays about the American Civil War attracted large numbers of visitors.
The homestead display showed the way people would have lived in the southern states of America during the 1860s.
There was also an arms emporium, with authentic weapons on display.
The medical camp demonstrated operations that would have taken place on the battlefield, complete with blood and gore. Instead of face-painting children were offered simulated scars and war-wounds.
There was a good mix of age groups attending the event.
"However, the whole thing did particularly appeal to young boys, of course", said Rachel Groom, Berkeley Castle's events officer.
"In addition to crowds from the local area, visitors from far afield signed our book, even from Australia."
The summer weather was also enjoyed by visitors to the antique and classic car show which took place simultaneously on Castle Meadow.
