RAINFALL for May amounted to 2.75in most of which fell during the first 11 days. Overnight rain on the 3rd, followed by heavy showers throughout the day on the 4th resulted in a measurement of 1.01in, making it the wettest day of the month. A further reading of 0.75in resulted from overnight rain on the 10th and a very heavy storm at 5pm on the 11th. From the 12th to the 31st however only a quarter of an inch of rain was recorded, making May the driest month since 1998.
At the beginning of the month temperatures were slow to rise but by the 15th of the month a reading of 20 degrees C (70F) had been reached and 11 of the next 17 days saw temperatures of 20C (70F) or higher, with a maximum of 23C (74F) achieved on the 16th and 31st.
The clear sunny days resulted in temperatures at night dropping as low as 4C (39F) on the 21st and 22nd, reminding gardeners to take care of delicate plants.
