SIR - In the Gazette of May 14 you ran an article on the visit of the Mothers' Union worldwide president, Trish Heywood to Gloucester diocese and, in particular, to its Money Advice Service. Perhaps readers would like to know a little more, since only this diocese has such a service.

The service was started 12 years ago during the recession to advise and act for families in debt. To date is has dealt with 761 cases through a team of voluntary, trained advisers.

The service, entirely free and confidential, is based on home visits by advisers who, if the client wishes, will take on the job of negotiation with creditors until the client is either debt free or at least in a stable financial position.

If any readers are in need of this service, they can leave a message on our answerphone on 01452 383288; email to mumoneyadvice@yahoo.co.uk or write to MUMAS at 18 College Green, Gloucester, GL1 2LR. All being well I will make the first contact with you in 24-48 hours.

Like all voluntary services, we do not always have enough people to go round so, if any readers would like to consider a few hours a week (or less) as an adviser, we can arrange the training. Again, just contact us by any of the above channels.

Rod Alexander, College Green, Gloucester
