TWO of Wotton-under-Edge's football stars of the future took part in a huge international tournament in France last week, and both displayed their promise by inspiring their side to victory.
Lee Williams and Will Dove, both ten, are members of the Bristol Rovers School of Excellence, and both have had their contracts renewed for next year having impressed during their first term.
The youngsters, both former Wotton Rovers youth players, were picked to play for the Bristol Rovers U10s side at the recent Canton de Combourg Cup, an international tournament that featured 64 junior teams, although the Rovers side were the only British team competing.
Lee, who attends The British Primary School, and Will, of The Blue Coat Primary School, were both very much in the action as Rovers stormed through the competition, eventually ousting all before them to claim the silverware.
The Rovers team was managed for the tournament by Scotland international goalkeeper Jonathan Gould, whose presence among the youngsters added to the thrill of the occasion. The former Celtic stopper, now at Preston, is the son of former Wales manager Bobby Gould, and needed all of the tactical know-how inherited from his father to mastermind the tournament success.
The 64 teams were divided into groups, and Rovers topped their one to progress into the second round, which was also made up of groups. Finishing second in this phase, the team progressed into the quarter-finals, where they won through on penalties, before triumphing 1-0 in the semi-finals.
In the final, Lee scored one of the goals as his side won 2-0 to secure the giant trophy.
