SIR - It is unseemly for the two environmentalist parties to squabble and I am sorry I started it but I was only trying to help Dudley George and his like make a choice.
Abstention would be a cop out for anyone in a democracy. Obviously Martin Whiteside has a dossier on Lib Dems' voting records but it is dodgy in one respect. It is true that Scottish MPs, who form the government with Labour, voted for GM crops, causing indignation in the party but strong legal advice they were given said a ban would not be defendable in the courts.
It is true that their outright opposition to the war was put on hold once our forces were involved, but that seems honourable to me.
On performance in matters green we cannot compare Lib Dem councils with Green ones yet, but the former have a high reputation. For instance, Lib Dem Sutton is always declared the greenest borough in London.
I would be delighted to meet Mr Whiteside in my teenage wood in Cam, followed by a discussion on green action in my home-from-home in Hill Road, Dursley.
For the second time I resolve to write no more letters to the Gazette.
