THE OWNER of a now closed pub in Wotton-under-Edge has hit back at criticism of his decision to convert the premises.

Barry Walker, of Dursley-based building contractors B Walker and Co Ltd, has defended a planning application for consent to change the ground floor of the 18th century Swan Hotel in Market Street to retail and office space.

As reported in the Gazette, the application came up against stiff opposition when it went before Wotton Town Council's planning committee.

Councillors argued the town needs to retain valuable community assets, including public houses.

The pub has been empty since it unexpectedly closed in January.

Cllr Dr John Cordwell said at the meeting the council had objected to a similar application in the past on the grounds the proposal is contrary to Stroud District Council's local plan.

Cllr Cordwell said that the pub is important to tourism and is an important community space.

He added: "The plan states community spaces - such as pubs and community halls - should stay unless there is no prospect of continued community use."

But Mr Walker said this is the first application of this nature and he already has consent for flats on the upper floors.

Mr Walker said The Swan is no longer viable as a public house.

"Over the last 12 years we have injected half a million pounds in this property," he stated. "Four tenants have tried to make a living out of The Swan only to lose their investments. If a change of use is granted, it will provide employment for quite a few local persons. If not, it will remain closed and boarded up."
