STROUD MP David Drew is backing a new campaign for better transport, launched by the Way to Go coalition which brings together more than 25 environment and social justice groups.
Mr Drew has signed an Early Day Motion in the Commons, supporting proposals for a transport system which is better for people, better for communities and better for the environment.
The coalition believes investing in road-building brings more traffic and congestion and encourages longer journeys.
It has drawn up a manifesto of 12 tried and tested measures, including improved public transport, bus lane networks, rail-freight projects and safe routes to schools, which should be extended nationwide. It is asking the Government to commit to implementing and funding the measures in its revised ten-year plan for transport, due to be published this summer.
The coalition is asking people to tell the government the sort of transport system they want to see by sending a postcard or email to their MP, saying they support the Way to Go campaign and asking the MP to pass these views on to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.
Mr Drew said: "I am delighted to support the Way to Go campaign. Transport is key to making life better for people in communities - giving us access to jobs, cleaner air and an environment we can all enjoy".
Speaking on behalf of the Way to Go coalition, Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner Tony Bosworth said: "We welcome David Drew's support for the Way to Go campaign. The measures we're calling for, such as safe routes to schools, improved public transport and better facilities for cycling and walking will make a huge difference to the transport problems in Stroud and to the quality of life of its residents".
