SIR - I thought readers may be interested in my experience of last weekend. As regulars at local motocross events, myself and my son, Joseph, decided to attend Weston Beach Race.
Naively I assumed this would be similar to local events. My views changed when Points West reported on the event stating how some 80,000 people were expected. Arriving at Weston on Sunday morning, we were advised to park in a side street as all official parking was already full.
The front was completely fenced off. It housed almost 1,000 motocross bikes along with a large number of trade stands.
On entering I was amazed. The sand had been bulldozed into huge mounds (some 20ft high) making seemingly impossible jumps. The entire beach was used making a gruelling track of two and a half miles.
Approximately 800 bikes started together(!) at 12.30pm, the idea being who completed the most laps in three hours. The first mile was a dash along the beech, the riders then U-turning to meet the jumps. It was a biking grand national!
Seeing these galant competitors struggle against the odds was quite remarkable. Competitor 415 was R Pekala (Dursley). Well done, Ray. At 3.30pm the race ended! I've never seen anything like this before and urge anyone to go along next year to view this spectacle for themselves.
