A SCOUT group is appealing for help to carry out vital repairs to its ageing hut.
Members of the 1st Berkeley Scouts have already started fund-raising to meet the costs of repairing the building behind Park View Road.
The hut, which serves as a regular meeting place for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, is also the venue for a number of community fun days and an annual bonfire party.
Group secretary Christopher Gent explained the hut was in need of some substantial repairs.
"The old asbestos roof needs to be replaced for safety reasons as well as for practical purposes as it leaks like a sieve," he said. "The lavatories and kitchen area need to be refurbished, and the whole location must offer disabled access."
The appeal has already received significant support from the community.
Mr Gent added: "Fundraising has started and particular thanks have to go to Mears Construction, Scott Law Stationery, the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes and the Langtree Trust, who have all given generous donations.
"Thanks also to Polyvine for their offer of paint or varnish and Jim Barge for leading a guided historical walk around the town."
Work on replacing the roof will start soon and there are several fund-raising events planned for the near future.
There will be a firework extravaganza on Saturday, November 1, a number of sponsored activities and regular farmers' markets.
Anyone who may be able to help with the project, by donation, sponsorship or by giving time is asked to contact group Scout leader Pat Day on 01453 810719 or Christopher Gent at Berkeley Court, Canonbury Street.
