POLICE in Chipping Sodbury are appealing for witnesses following the death of a pony at a sponsored ride in Badminton Park.
Officers are investigating allegations that the animal died as the result of maltreatment.
The incident happened towards the end of the annual sponsored ride in aid of Tetbury Hospital, which took place on Sunday, September 28.
About 4.30pm two men and a young woman were trying to load a 13.2hh bay pony in the field used for horse-boxes and trailers.
According to witnesses, the trio were allegedly beating the animal which was refusing to enter the horse-box.
The pony then reared up and fell a number of times, eventually sustaining such severe injuries to its head that the vet in attendance at the event ordered it to be destroyed.
The incident was reported to police the following week and is being investigated by PC Lee Bainbridge in liaison with the RSPCA.
She said: "This was a major event, with at least 900 riders taking part. A number of people have already come forward as witnesses, but we need to hear from anyone else who was in that field at the time. We also want to hear from anyone who was taking photographs at the event.
"Anyone who can help our inquiries is asked to contact me at Chipping Sodbury police station by calling 01275 818181."
Alternatively witnesses can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
