A MAJORITY vote against plans for a gypsy site on Yate's Road to Nowhere has been registered by South Gloucestershire's planners.
At a joint meeting last week, between the council's planning select committee and the two development control committees, it was decided to go against Local Plan inspector David Fenton's recommendations.
Mr Fenton has said that a travellers' site should be considered for the Road to Nowhere, on Yate Common. His thoughts, however, have been met with massive opposition from the people of Yate, particularly those living near the site.
Clive Long, of Chedworth, spoke at the meeting. He later told the Gazette: "They voted in our favour and I am pleased with the result.
"There is not much we can do now as residents, but personally, I don't think it will go any further. We are hoping to get a decision rubber-stamped at the next meeting on March 7."
The vote against the proposed travellers' site will be put to all South Gloucestershire councillors before a final decision is made on March 23.
Added Mr Long, who helped collect more than 1,000 signatures against the site: "I think we are about 80 percent there but we will probably let residents know what happens after the next meeting.
"I shall be glad when it is all over."
