LONG-SUFFERING residents who have put up with huge groups of youngsters drinking late and causing trouble will not have a public meeting, despite pushing for one.

People living near St Mary's Park, in Yate, had asked town mayor Cllr Alan Monaghan to arrange a meeting so they could air their grievances and call for action.

They will now be told, however, that problems of alcohol abuse, vandalism and noise are getting fewer and that a public meeting is not necessary.

Cllr Chris Wilmore said at a council meeting on Tuesday: "Public meetings are useful when you need to find out what people think but we are under no illusions that residents down there have had their fair time of it.

"It has been so bad to the point that the police have been involved heavily."

She said it would be better to send residents a letter explaining that action had been taken and that a number of teenagers had been caught causing trouble by police.

Cllr Sue Evan-Jones went further and suggested that a leaflet on anti-social behaviour orders be sent to all residents in the area.

She argued people would then be able to keep logs of particular youths who continually caused trouble.

She said: "We could include a list of useful phone numbers and let people know what they have to do to enforce an ASBO. It worked when we had problems in Windsor Drive."
