Phoenix WI v Old Down 1st XI

OLD Down, playing their first game of the season, lost a close encounter with Phoenix West Indians by ten runs last Saturday.

Batting first on an unsatisfactory surface, Phoenix were soon in trouble as Ian Maunder removed Harper (5), Zane Bowen (3) and Evans (0). Depass (12) was run out thanks to a sharp piece of fielding from Barry Reeves and great skill from keeper Mike Rowen, flicking the ball on to the stumps on the run.

The rest of the Phoenix innings was built around Gayle, who finished 45 not out batting at seven, whilst Vergo scored just 11 from 67 balls before being bowled by Gary Warren. Phoenix finished 127-9 from 45 overs.

The pick of Old Down's bowlers were Ian Maunder 10-3-11-3 and Welsher 12.4-6-28-2. They received good support from Andy Rowen 10.2-3-21-1, before he had to retire from the attack with a shoulder injury. Gary Warren, although lacking control, took 2-21 from five overs.

Old Down's reply got off to a disastrous start and they were soon 38-6, before a partnership of 49 between Mike Rowen and skipper Dave Gardner rescued the innings. Mike Rowen was trapped by one that kept low, having made a terrific 58 (5 fours, 4 sixes) from 58 balls.

At this stage Gardener himself went on the attack but lacked support from the remaining batsmen and perished, bowled for 29, when Old Down were ten runs short of their target.

Phoenix were well served by Luke (4-14) and Joyner (4-46), while Depass and Nathan Bowen took 1-19 and 1-23 respectively.

Old Down looked tidy in the field, but their batting in general looked seriously lacking in practice and application.

This was a game that could and should have been won, but at least they closed the gap following comprehensive defeats against the same opponents last season.

Promoted Failand and Portbury visit The Park on Saturday (2pm start).
