THE RIDGEWOOD Community Centre has re-opened following a £2 million face-lift.

The centre was officially opened on Friday, which also marked the start of Adult Learners' Week.

The Grade II listed building in Yate will provide a multi-use learning facility, with space available for community activities.

South Gloucestershire Council, which uses the site for post-19 education, worked in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council to repair, refurbish and improve existing facilities. During the work, the centre was made more accessible and suitable for learners with special educational needs and disabilities. The upgraded building will serve a range of learning needs within the community.

During the past year 2,500 students were involved in activities at the centre. The improved centre will now enable South Gloucestershire Council's adult and community learning service to increase its range of specialist ICT provision and the vocational and recreational courses offered.

Cllr Sheila Cook, executive member for education and lifelong learning, said: "The new centre will provide distinctive and attractive accommodation, continuing a long tradition of its use by residents while responding to the changing needs of the community."

Cllr Sue Walker, chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, who is also a Yate councillor, said: "This building has been such an important part of the community. It has been a real focal point and we had to keep it because it is so loved and so much a part of life in the community.

"We had a dream but we couldn't see it mounting to anything. But by working in partnership we have a really good focus for the community. We have a facility that people will use for years to come."

Steve Webb, MP for Northavon, said: "I came in here and I was overwhelmed that such a fantastic building is part of the community. I want to thank the Learning and Skills Council for seeing the potential of this project."

Cllr Alan Monaghan, chairman of Yate Town Council, said: "I think it is great. It will be an asset and something which will be well used. It is fantastic to see it opening after so much work."
