A MAN is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car on a notoriously dangerous road in Yate.
The 33-year-old pedestrian, from Yate, was in collision with a car on Rodford Way on Sunday.
A police spokeswoman said: "He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in a serious condition.
"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call the police collision investigation unit on 0845 456 7000."
The accident happened near Witcombe, just yards from the site where 13-year-old Daisy Witney died in November 2008.
The teenager, from Badgeworth, was in collision with a van after choosing to cross the busy road instead of using a nearby underpass.
Since then, Dodington Parish Council and Yate Town Council have been calling for a pedestrian crossing to be installed to make Rodford Way safer.
Dodington parish councillor Paul Hulbert told the Gazette that a solution was needed.
He said: "All that has been done so far has been things like more signs advertising the underpass and proposals to smarten the area up.
"We need a proper engineering solution, whether that is a surface level crossing or barriers to deter people from crossing the road.
"Any solution has to be designed with people in mind as well as engineering."
Local residents have been commenting on the underpass on Cllr Hulbert’s online blog.
One said: "Yet another accident on Rodford way in view of the underpass. I wonder why people are so reluctant to walk a few extra steps to use this?
"I have heard people don’t use it because of anti-social kids but having lived near to, and used the underpass for the last 10 years, I can say that I have never witnessed any problems there and neither have any members of my family who also use the underpass rather than crossing the main road.
"If there is an identified problem with anti-social behaviour in the underpass then this should be communicated to the police who should do regular checks of the area."
Sgt Adrian Fallows, from Chipping Sodbury police, said the issue was being dealt with by South Gloucestershire Council.
The results of a second pedestrian crossing, carried out last month by South Gloucestershire Council, are expected to be revealed shortly.
