AN RAF Nimrod pilot is aiming to run the Oldbury Fun Run circuit for 24 hours continuously.

Simon Shaw, 36, who is originally from Tockington but who now lives in Scotland, will be returning to the area to start his fun run at midday on Saturday, June 18.

Mr Shaw plans to run and walk the four-mile circuit until the end of the official fun run the next day. He hopes to cover approximately 100 miles in his attempt.

He said: "I am looking to compete in long distance endurance events over the next few years and the fun run was perfect timing to try for 100 miles in 24 hours.

"I will be walking up and down any inclines and tabbing on the level - tabbing being a military walk/jog. I will be doing the event in boots and with a pack."

The father-of-three has said he would welcome anyone who wants to join him around the route at any point during the 24-hour challenge.

Organisers have said they are receiving entries on a daily basis, with the teams category proving ever popular.

The four-mile fun run, which is taking place on Father’s Day, will again raise money for the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, as well as other local groups.

For the second year, runners have been allowed to enter in teams. Some that have already signed up include the Gazette staff and friends, The Fat Pigeons, which is a team of 24 from Oldbury Power Station, the whole of Oldbury Primary School and a team from Crossways Junior School in Thornbury.

Debbie Dix, head teacher of Oldbury Primary School, said: "At our governors meeting recently it was suggested that we try to promote our school by linking in with the fun run, which gets a lot of local publicity."

Last year more than 1,000 runners took part in the fun run, helping to raise a record £13,000.
