A FORMER head girl who devoted her life to caring for premature babies has had her life story put down on paper.

Dorothy Heaven MBE, known as Dolly, was born in Wotton-under-Edge and was head girl at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School.

After training to become a nurse she worked in Bristol Royal Infirmary during the Second World War and was working the night it was hit by a bomb.

However it was her work in midwifery that she became most respected for, working in one of the first premature baby care units in Taunton.

She was never married or had children herself but she nursed hundreds of near-death premature babies back to life. She was given the MBE for services to nursing.

Residential care writer Gill Garrett helped Dolly, who now lives at the Hollies Care Home in Dursley and turns 90 this year, put the story down on paper.

"She has led such an incredible and interesting life," said Mrs Garrett. "She has given a whole life of service."
