EIGHTEEN people have been arrested during the first week of a police summer crackdown on drink and drug driving.
The month-long high profile campaign, Operation Tonic, was launched by Avon and Somerset police at the beginning of June with the message Don’t Do It.
As well as the 18 arrests, police have also stopped 4,295 vehicles for checks in the first week of the campaign.
Chief Inspector John Holt, of Operations and Traffic Management, said: "We take drink and drug-driving extremely seriously all year round, but a summer campaign is a timely way of focusing people’s minds on the dangers and consequences of getting behind the wheel when they shouldn’t."
Officers will be making high-visibility stop checks and will breathalyse anyone involved in a road accident across Avon and Somerset. Last year Operation Tonic saw 141 motorists arrested , and a further 30,000 stop checks were made.
