POLICE made 29 arrests during the first fortnight of their summer drink drive campaign.

Gloucestershire Police arrested 18 people in the first week and a further 11 in the second week of the campaign, which began at the start of the month.

Of those arrested 20 were men and nine were women.

The 18 arrests in the first week was deemed high compared to usual averages.

Inspector Jason Keates, of the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said: "We are pleased to see a reduction in arrests during the second week of the campaign, as the figures for the first week were rather high.

"These latest figures are about average for us, but it’s still obviously disappointing that people are continuing to drink and drive despite all the publicity this campaign has attracted.

He added: "We will only consider the campaign to be a success when we make no arrests at all, because that will mean that there are no drivers putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs."
