CHANGES in the speed limit have been announced around a new housing development in Yate.

South Gloucestershire Council is planning to introduce a 20mph zone in the Elswick Park estate on Kennedy Way, where 228 homes are under construction.

The authority is also planning to extend a 30mph limit on Kennedy Way by 110 metres to include the junction of the Taylor Wimpey development.

A spokesman said: "The purpose of this proposal is to reduce speeds on the approach to the junction into the site and to improve road safety for vehicles turning in and out of the development."

There are also plans to introduce waiting restrictions at a new lay-by on Kennedy Way, which will be used by refuse collection vehicles, and in the existing cul-de-sac Shackleton Avenue as well as in Mulberry Crescent, a new road which will be created within Elswick Park.

Drivers leaving the housing estate will also be banned from turning right.

Added the spokesman: "This will help protect the visibility around the junction of Kennedy Way with the new development to help those coming in and out of the site."

All the changes will be paid for by Taylor Wimpey and are subject to public consultation. Visit www.southglos.gov.uk for further information.
