PILNING Carnival was a runaway success once again this year with a fun-filled day of dancing and dressing up.

The village event on Saturday saw schoolchildren take to the streets in a spectacular procession of floats, residents adorn their houses in a best-dressed competition and entertainers perform dazzling displays in a specially-made arena.

But for one couple, Pilning stalwarts Roy and Pat Edwardes, the day was a right Royal affair. Carnival veterans Mr and Mrs Edwardes were chosen as this year’s King and Queen and were given the responsibility of judging the winning float and were treated to a carriage ride through the village.

Said Mr Edwardes: "It was a marvellous day and my wife and I will remember it for a very long time.

"We were thrilled to bits to be asked to be King and Queen and we both thought there was a lovely atmosphere.

"Everyone seemed to have a very good day."

St Peter’s Primary School, in Pilning, was named the best overall float for its Alice in Wonderland entry featuring 52 children dressed as a pack of cards walking behind a lorry load of characters from the children's storybook.

A special mention was also made to Severn Beach Play Group for the children’s Royal Wedding walking entry, complete with toddlers dressed as William and Kate who even treated audiences to a Royal kiss.

The best dressed house was won by 43 and 45 Redwick Road for a joint Indian reservation display.
