RUNNERS leapt into gear again this year to complete the Oldbury Fun Run to raise money for children’s charity CLIC Sargent.

The annual event was a huge success with almost 1,000 runners and walkers turning out to run the four mile course around the village.

One man who went the extra mile was RAF Nimrod pilot Simon Shaw, who set himself the challenge of running and walking the course continually for 24 hours.

Unfortunately for the 36-year-old, who is originally from Tockington, he was forced to stop at 23 hours as his feet and ankles had swollen so much he could not continue – but made a valiant effort regardless.

Chairman of the event Nicolas Dunn said the word ‘brilliant’ was used on more than one occasion during the day.

"We had many teams enter and they all made a great effort in the run. The winning team was The Anchor Inn, Oldbury, in the red start," said Mr Dunn.

"After the run many people stayed on to enjoy the attractions and stalls and a real village day was enjoyed by them.

"I am truly amazed at all the hard work and the time and effort put into this event by many people both before and on the day."

The Gazette team also ran the event again this year and looks on course to raise over £200.
