AN EX-SCHOOL teacher from Rockhampton who used the London Marathon as a warm-up has headed for the Everest Base Camp.

In an attempt to raise £100,000 for charity, Narinjan Singh, 58, a former teacher at Ridings High School in Winterbourne, is embarking on challenges that would deter most people.

Last month he walked the 26-mile London Marathon in five hours and 41 minutes.

He said: "Hundreds of thousands of people lined the route for the 32nd marathon, it was incredible. The crowd were so encouraging, enthusiastic and helpful with energy drinks and sweets."

He added: "I would definitely take part in another London Marathon and would certainly recommend it to others for the experience and enjoyment."

Mr Singh barely allowed himself time to recover and last Thursday, May 3 headed for Nepal where he is currently trekking three high passes and three peaks.

Over three weeks Mr Singh, along with 10 others, will trek along the Everest Trail, walking along the Renjo La, Cho La and the Kongma La.

The will also climb three walking peaks; Gokyo Ri at 5,483 metres, Kala Pattar at 5,545 metres and Chukkung Ri at 5,550 metres.

Speaking before he left, Mr Singh told the Gazette: "I am looking forward to the conditions I will experience, the views I will see and of course meeting the people."

However, the challenge does not stop there as in August, after his return, Mr Singh will complete his third and final venture - a 13,000ft skydive.

Mr Singh is embarking on the challenges in memory of his mother and in aid of the charity WaterAid, which helps communities in less fortunate areas of the world to have close and safe access to water.
