POLICE in Thornbury will be advising residents on ways to secure their sheds and garages at a special event this month, following a hike in break-ins.

Although the number of burgled homes fell by 19 per cent in 2011-2012, burglaries of outbuildings were up by 10 per cent during that period with an extra 132 targeted in the area.

The neighbourhood team has teamed up Lee's Mend-a-Shoe in Thornbury to hold an anti-theft advice session in St Mary Centre on Thursday, May 31 2012 Neighbourhood PC Natalie Draper said: "As well as carrying out high-visibility uniformed patrols in crime hotspots and targeting known offenders, we want to make sure local people know what they can do to deter thieves."

At the event, a special shed fitted with various security features and alarms will be on display to highlight ways in which residents can deter thieves from breaking into their outhouses. They will also receive tips from officers and will be able to ask their questions directly to PCSOs.

PC Draper added: "One of the best things you can do is fit a low-cost shed alarm which will alert you to anyone trying to break into your outbuildings."

The event will run from 11am to 2pm.
