Forest Green Rovers have signed their third goalkeeper recruit ahead of the new League Two season by capturing former Swansea City youngster Lewis Thomas on a two-year deal.
The signing of Thomas,20, is the final bit of transfer dealings for goalkeeping coach Pat Mountain, after bringing in James Montgomery from Gateshead and Robert Sanchez on loan from Brighton, with Montgomery and Sanchez going glove-to-glove for the number No 1 shirt.
Thomas has been with Swansea since the age of nine and signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2015.
A Wales Under-19 international, he helped the young Swans to three FAW Youth Cup titles and was part of the Premier League 2 double-winning squad in the 2016/17 season.
Thomas said: “I’m very excited, I’ve been waiting for this for a couple of weeks now and I’m just glad to get it over the line and get started with Forest Green.
“I came up here towards the end of last season and had a couple of days training. I saw what the club was about just from those two days. I enjoyed working with Pat Mountain, he was a big influence for me coming here.
“I also see the ambition and the drive that the club’s got going forward so for me this was the only club I wanted to come to.”
Mountain added: “There was a lot of young goalkeepers fighting for places at Swansea, and Lewis has been struggling to get games and move his career forwards.
“Sometimes you need to come away from that to improve your career, otherwise you’ll become a training goalkeeper and only play a handful of games.
“Lewis coming here is a big forward move for his career as he’ll be a part of the first team and I expect him to really push him on in that environment.
“He’s got a lot of improvement in him - that’s why he’s come here and that’s what we’ll try and do.
“I think we have a really strong department that will push the club forward.
“Richard Hughes (head of recruitment) has been brilliant in moving these deals through and I want to say a special thanks to the chairman (Dale Vince), who’s been super supportive of the work we’re doing and has been really patient to get these deals done.”
Thomas becomes FGR’s seventh signing of the summer, after Carl Winchester, Tahvon Campbell, Joseph Mills, George Williams, Montgomery and Sanchez.
The deal is subject to international clearance and EFL and FA approval.
