Hockey Thornbury 3, Pucklechurch 2 A HIGHLY enjoyable friendly between two evenly-matched sides saw Thornbury start the new year with a pleasing victory.

Play see-sawed from end to end with the visitors enjoying the better chances early in the game.

Zoe Barnett gave Thornbury the lead following an intelligent through ball from Katie Bridgeman. Tina Rainey scored an equaliser for Pucklechurch only for Sarah Newman to hammer home immediately to regain the home side's lead.

In the second half Jen Boland again put Pucklechurch level. Thornbury scored the winning goal with a powerful shot from Rachel Gardner.

Firebrands IV 1, Thornbury II 3 THORNBURY gained a deserved win over a game Firebrands side. The experienced trio Annie Griffin, Tracey Jones and Mel Joseph caused problems for the home side whilst Liz Jenkins, Emily Quinton and Mary Quinton were effective in defence.

Sarah Stewart opened the scoring with a well-executed strike following some pleasing interplay with Harriet McCleod and Lucy Taylor. Amy Payne grabbed two for Thornbury, the first of which was a fine individual effort when she received the ball on halfway and dodged past three players before completely deceiving the keeper to score.

On Saturday the first team entertain Chippenham (3.30pm), the seconds visit Chippenham and the thirds visit Wotton-under-Edge, who also play at Castle School (12.15pm start).
