Football VCF Santos 2 Thornbury Baptist Church 6 THORNBURY Baptist put behind them the disappointing loss which ended 2007 and started 2008 playing some exciting football with a resounding win over mid-table VCF.
On a wet pitch, the first half was played almost entirely in Santos territory with some great passing moves which attracted a number of passers-by at Patchway to stop and watch. Ironically, the first two goals were somewhat more simple as set-pieces from Underdown were finished off by Chris Beddoes and Stu Kelly at close range.
The third goal was the best of the match as a six player move down the left hand side resulted in a the ball being laid back to Kelly 20 yards out who side-footed a pinpoint shot into the top corner which the keeper Peregrine could do nothing about.
One aspect of The Baps' season has been the strong bench and Mark Bowers and Dave Tushingham came on for the second half to cause VCF Santos even more problems.
From a corner, Bowers made it 4-1 (after a counter-attack consolation goal for the home team).
From then on in it was all Thornbury. An Underdown shot was diverted past the keeper by a VCF defender and then man-of-the-match Stu Kelly completed his hat-trick with a penalty.
