Rugby Thornbury 5 Gordon League 3 A late try by winger Ben Fowkes saw Thornbury beat Gordon League and move above them in the league table.
It was a score that crowned a fine second half performance in a hard game played at the Grammar School Fields as the club pitch at Rockhampton Road was unplayable.
Play in the first half was dominated by tough forward exchanges.
Thornbury had the edge behind the scrums, but runs from Wayne Underwood and Dai Matthews plus forwards Stuart Massey and Carl Boucherled to nothing.
Late in the half Gordon League pressurised Thornbury in the home 22 and eventually referee Natalie Amor ran out of patience, and yellow-carded Evan Hughes, for an infringement at the breakdown.
Gordon League kicked a penalty to open the scoring on the stroke of half time.
The second half saw Thornbury dominate.
They denied the visitors possession and the entire side tackled fiercely when defending, although the conditions made scoring difficult.
With ten minutes remaining, a quick lineout ball won by Nick Balman was moved to Matthews from Stuart Adams.
The outside half broke through the visitors' defence and the move was taken on by Andy Bamford and Carl Boucher, before moving quickly out to Fowkes to finish a fine try.
