Filton College U18 20 Truro College U18 6 Filton College progressed to the quarter-finals of the Daily Mail cup for the first time after beating Truro.

They made a rocky start to the game after conceding early territory, and Truro showed their intent straight away by playing wide from a lineout and keeping the ball alive during a good passage of play.

However, Filton prop Joe Rees, who has been selected in the Wales under-18 training squad, stripped the Truro outside centre of the ball in the midfield. From here, the ball was spread quickly wide with scrum half Ralph Jones darting through and feeding winger Elliott Nightingale on the left for his first try. Fly half Steffan Jones then stepped up to add the conversion.

Truro replied immediately and the Filton defence held out a cascade of Truro attacks with the Cornishmen being held up over the line three times before knocking-on over the try line.

From this point it became a dual of goal kicking with Filton's Steffan Jones adding a penalty and the Truro fly half kicking two of his own from infringements at the breakdown.

The second half saw two tries from Filton College to secure the game.

The first of these tries came ten minutes after the interval when Filton went wide from a driving lineout. Full-back Elliott Read cleverly kicked a ball through for Nightingale to gather and crash over for his second score.

The third Filton score came ten minutes from the end of the match when the ball was kept alive with good inter-linking from the backs and forwards, with both width and penetration.

On-form full back Elliott Read finished the sequence with a well taken try out wide on the right taking two Truro defenders over with him.

Solid defending from Filton and use of the replacements bench saw the game end with a mixture of relief and euphoria.

Head of rugby Andrew Webb said: "We are really pleased with the whole squad this season.

"To be just two games away from playing at Twickenham is all the motivation the lads need."

In October they were crowned champions of the prestigious St. Joseph's Festival and more recently they have gained wins over Hartpury College from Gloucester, Oaklands College, Exeter College and Twyford High School.

Filton now face an away tie at St. Benedict's School in Ealing for the quarter-finals on Wednesday February 6.
