YATE hockey club were involved in seven matches across the weekend.
There was a double-header for Yate Women 2s and they travelled to Old Bristolians in the first match.
Currently top of the table, Yate were looking to increase their lead to 8 points and they set the tone early, getting into the opponent's D within minutes of the whistle. Yate won successive penalty corners and finally converted one of them as Player of the Match Lucy Saunders pushed it in.
In the second half an excellent run down the line led to an easy knock in for Saunders for her brace and Yate sealed the win with a final goal from Sally Thomas-Ellis to finish the match 3-0 and move them eight points clear at the top.
That lead was extended to 11 points on Sunday when Yate 2s beat Redland 3s 2-1 away from home.
Elsewhere, Yate Ladies 1s came away with a 2-2 draw on Saturday from a feisty match at home against Westberries.
The tone was set after five minutes when a stray stick found Zoe Vale's eye socket but Yate's player of the match was back on the pitch making vital tackles as soon as she had been patched up.
Yate found themselves 1-0 down five minutes later, when Westberries pounced on a loose pass back and fired the ball past the Yate keeper.
Yate equalised through Helen Servettaz who swept the ball into the net following a penalty corner. Yate then took the lead from another set-piece when Emily skilfully deflected in Holly Davis' shot.
The second half saw Yate spend the majority of time in their own half. Chances were created; the Westberries keeper preventing Antonia Joy's reverse stick strike hitting the roof of the net, but the game ended 2-2.
Yate 3s took on Lydney 3s without a goalkeeper and despite their best efforts, they were unable to keep their opponents out as Lydney won 4-2. Nic Bruce and Heidi Bruce scored the goals for Yate.
As for the men; Yate 1s played at home against Cardiff University 2s, who were two places above them in the table.
Yate started the stronger, playing out from the back finding Matt Robins in the midfield, who skilfully danced through four players and slipped the ball through to an unaware Jason who finally located the ball and squared it to Rhys to slap in.
Yate continued to resist the students' press and won a few penalty corners and, after the third attempt, Dom Chambers found the bottom corner.
Cardiff Uni started the second half stronger, putting a good period of play together and finally getting their goal after a breakdown at the penalty corner.
The game started to get a bit scrappy with a few cards coming out for ill-discipline, and the visitors again found the goal after a quick counter attack to finish off the game ending 2-2.
Yate men’s 2s lost 5-0 away to University of Bristol 4s.
Yate also had the second round of the mixed cup against Bath Buccs on Sunday. It was a very high scoring game, finishing 7-10 with Bath Buccs coming out on top. Goals came from Kyishia Cooke x 4, Jess Brain, Antonia Joy and Matt Child.
