IT proved to be an incredibly successful weekend for some of Yate Hockey Club's talented youngsters.
Yate U12s (see photo) performed brilliantly in the Avon League Hockey Festival on Sunday, winning all four games and scoring 20 goals.
In senior action over the weekend, both the men and women's first teams were in action.
Yate Men 1s
Yate started slowly at Cardiff University 2s but held strong, in the first-half to keep the scores locked at 0-0.
In the second half, Dylan Bruce woke up, making some fantastic runs down the left-hand side, tormenting their right back. Yate's midfield and forward players started to link up with some cute interplay but were stopped by a couple of good saves from the Cardiff keeper.
Finally, the breakthrough came with some quick thinking from Dylan Jackson, eliminating the defenders and squaring it to Alex Whittle, who nervously trickled the ball onto the backboard.
Yate managed to fend off Cardiff, even when they were down to 9 players in the last 2 minutes, to record a fourth straight victory.
Yate Ladies 1s
The sunshine thawed the YOSC pitch just in time to make it playable for ladies 1s to take on Gloucester City 2 in a mid-table clash.
In a tight first-half, Lucy Joy commanded the Yate defence well and Zoe vale was denied following a penalty flick.
In the second half, Yate had their chances; Antonia Joy forced another great save with her reverse strike before they broke the deadlock when player of the match Kyishia Cooke’s flicked the ball over the keeper and into the net.
Gloucester piled on the pressure, which eventually told as a penalty flick was converted following a penalty corner. The visitors sought a winner but Yate held on for a draw.
Yate Ladies 2s
Yate ladies 2s travelled to face Cheddar in a fixture set in-front of the famous Cheddar Gorge.
Despite the scenery, Yate were not distracted on push back, challenging the home side straight from the whistle.
Several early attempts on goal got Cheddar flustered, including a strike from Chloe Wallace on a short corner that flew within a cracker’s width of the Cheddar goal.
Yate were proving equally difficult to breach and the final result was a fair one at 0-0.
Yate Men 2s
Yate Men’s 2s hosted Clifton Robinsons 7 in a top of the table clash. In an entertaining and tight match Yate were very unlucky to concede with two minutes to go, therefore losing 1-0.
