THORNBURY Cricket Club were delighted to host a fantastic festival of cricket last week as seven local primary schools competed for the Thornbury Primary Schools Kwik Cricket Cup, now in it’s 13th year.

With more than 100 boys and girls and eight squads of Year 5 players taking part, Thornbury’s home ground at the Ship Field was a blur of activity for three hours last Thursday afternoon, as each team played four matches of Kwik cricket, a game specifically designed to ensure that all players have a chance to bat, bowl, field and keep wicket.

The result of the competition was in doubt until the final round of matches, with any one of five schools able to win the coveted trophy, but at the end of a superb competition, Manorbrook Primary emerged triumphant, knocking up 986 runs during the afternoon. In second place, just 13 runs adrift were Gillingstool, with St Helen’s very close behind. Almondsbury, last year’s champions Crossways, Olveston and St Mary’s were the other competing schools. Manorbrook’s captain proudly accepted the trophy, which was sponsored again this year by the Lords’ Taverners, from Thornbury Cricket Club’s Head Coach and former England International cricketer David Allen. All members of the winning squad also received an individual medal and all schools taking part received a Competition Certificate.

Mike Collett, Chairman of Thornbury’s Junior Committee and organiser of the competition commented: “Thornbury Cricket Club is very proud to host this splendid event, which has been run every year since 1996. It is wonderful to see so many boys and girls enjoying their afternoon of cricket and there were some very talented players on display.”
