A TEXT message from former Forest Green hero Stuart Fleetwood could prove to be an inspirational move in the mind games stakes, but new striker Andy Mangan insists he's not seeking to emulate his old mate.

Fleetwood, a former Accrington Stanley team-mate of Mangan's when the duo were on loan there together, left a message urging the former Blackpool and Bury man to become Rovers' new hero under the astute management of Jim Harvey.

Mangan said: "Fleets is a top man, but I'm not trying to emulate him. We share the same pace on the ball, but I would say I'm quicker off the ball."

Having been released by Bury at the end of the season, his path to the New Lawn appears to be moving in a similar mode to that of Fleetwood, who was released by Hereford last year.

He added: "Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to take two forward and Fleets has done exactly this with his move to Charlton.

"At Bury I hardly played in the last four months with a double hernia and groin problem, but that is all behind me now. I hate setting targets, but I would like to hit the 20-goal mark this season."

The Liverpool-based 21-year-old, who will live with Alex Lawless in Gloucester during the week, is confident he can flourish under Harvey.

"No disrespect to Forest Green, but Jim should be managing at a higher level," said Mangan.

"He has really impressed me. I knew he rated me and he told me at a game once how much he would like to work with me.

"Jim reminds me of my first manager at Blackpool, Steve McMahon, he inspires confidence in you and is a father-like figure."
