DURSLEY driver David Stokes continued his recent good run at the weekend with a fine second overall in the Post Historics and first in class on the Harry Flatters Rally, writes Paul Willetts.

The two-day event, held entirely on the Epynt Military Ranges near Brecon, started with two 12-mile stages on the Saturday evening.

After a steady run on the opening test, Stokes and co-driver Guy Weaver set the second fastest time on stage two to arrive back in Brecon fourth overall, and first in class.

Day two offered another eight tests on deceptive tarmac roads, but Stokes is somewhat an Epynt veteran having competed up there first in the 1970’s, winning the 1978 Halewood Rally, and the Draycott Bakerys / Cambrian Tyres Escort RS 1600 never missed a beat.

His only worrying moment came on stage nine, when he had a slight off due to cold tyres, but the reigning MSA Historic Champion and spectators’ favourite, brought the car home to score another 30 championship points.

Co-driver Weaver said: “It has been another good weekend, the car has gone well, it’s nice to have some variation of stages on the ranges.

“David has driven well, entertaining the spectators as usual. We now need to go to Belgium and get another good haul of points to pull ourselves up into contention before the final round in Yorkshire.”
