ALMONDSBURY TOWN have had a mixed week as they reached the final of the SBJ Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup final while their FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier title dream finally came to an end.
Their run of ten consecutive wins in the league was halted with the 2-2 draw at Hook Norton on Saturday but they kept their hopes of ending the season with some silverware alive by beating Old Woodstock Town 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
Kane Ingram scored a brace, opening the scoring in the first half when he worked some space in the box and fired into the bottom corner.
In the second half Ingram was fouled in the penalty area and then got up to take the spot himself.
Manager Paul Weeks said: “The performance was superb and it was a good result as well so it’s a good opportunity now for us to get some silverware.”
For Weeks the season is ending at the wrong time as his Almondsbury side have hit top form recently, and he believes if they had another ten games they would win the league.
Almondsbury have been playing catch-up to Hungerford Town and Shortwood United all season and they head into the last game against Reading Town looking to cement a top three finish.
Weeks said: “I cannot ask for any more from the guys, we’ve taken 31 points from the last 33 and there are not many sides in the world who can do that.
“In 2009 alone we would have won the league hands down. Last year the squad was dismantled and it took three or four months to rebuild and we didn’t get going until January. If we had another ten games we would have won the league.”
They took the lead on 22 minutes against Hook Norton when Brad Andrews supplied the through-ball, and Adam Cole found the net from just inside the box with a superb finish.
Lee Bridson’s error allowed Peter Vaughan to equalise midway through the first half and they went in front early in the second through Vaughan again.
After Cole was upended in the box for the second time in the game, the official pointed to the spot. Ingram converted the penalty giving the keeper no chance with 22 minutes to go.
