THE first of back to back matches between these two teams was a typical end of season encounter.

Thornbury are well entrenched in mid-table and planning for next season while Hanham had more to play for to just keep ahead of the relegation zone. The game ended all square but both teams had chances to have secured all three points.

Thornbury looked the livelier of the two teams from the start and Chris Parry shot over the bar when clear on goal.

It was the same player that did eventually put Town in front when a cross-come shot was held up in the wind and eluded the Hanham keeper at his far post. However within minutes Hanham were level when concentration got the better of Thornbury and a sweet strike from Mark Pocock nestled in the Thornbury net.

The second half started the same as the first with Thornbury having the upper hand and they should have regained the lead when Chris Parry was free in the penalty area but his shot from six yards out was hit firm into the ground and sailed over the Hanham bar. Within minutes of this miss, Hanham somehow took the lead when, from a corner kick, the ball bounced off the back off Shaun Morris and via the post into the net.

Try as they could to get back on level terms it was Hanham who had the opportunity to seal the game after 87 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball which was neatly saved by the Thornbury keeper. With time running out it was left to 16-year-old Thornbury man of the match Tom Webb to execute a neat left footed cross into the Hanham six yard box for Steve Alexander to gain a yard on his marker and sneak the ball home for a well deserved equaliser.

Saturday sees the reverse fixture with Hanham (3pm).
