MANAGER James Cole is hoping Slimbridge can complete a prestigious double ahead of tonight’s GFA Challenge Trophy final at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury.
They will almost certainly be playing in Hellenic Division One West next season after beating Henbury last Saturday and know that a point at home to Tuffley on Saturday will mathematically secure the County League title.
Second-placed Kings Stanley are six points behind with two games left following last night’s 1-0 win over Henbury, and if they somehow catch Slimbridge, they would need a goal swing of 16 to overhaul them at the summit.
So it’s fairly safe to say that Toolstation Western Premier Division runaway champions Bitton stand in the way of Slimbridge and a league and cup double, and Cole knows his side are in for a tough game.
"We’re looking forward to Bitton," he said. "We’re massive underdogs, they’re a great side. We’ll hopefully compete on the day and get the result."
"It’s an important week with the cup final and then Tuffley, hopefully we can win a cup and the title in the same week."
The Swans were far from their best in their 2-0 victory over Henbury but Marc Roffe came off the bench to score on 72 minutes and Dennis Hylton secured the three points seven minutes later.
Slimbridge looked the more threatening in the first half without seriously testing Henbury’s goalkeeper, with most chances falling to Jamie Martin.
The winger headed wide from Steve Badham’s cross on 13 minutes and dragged wide from 15 yards seven minutes later after Fred Ward’s persistence presented an opportunity.
Another Martin effort went over when he opted to try and lob the goalkeeper after Badham’s through ball before Badham himself volleyed wide from a tight angle.
The roles reversed in the second half as Henbury started the brighter side and Shane Hobbs had two good chances in the opening 11 minutes but shot over from 15 yards an hit another effort wide when well placed in the box.
Goalkeeper Ryan Chandler then saved a George Watts shot from ten yards out with his legs.
A tactical switch from 4-4-3 to 4-4-2 seemed to do the trick for Slimbridge with substitute Roffe putting them ahead.
After a long ball forward Hylton used his strength to shrug off Jack Collins and, as the referee ignored the visitors’ pleas for shirt pulling, the striker laid the ball off to Roffe whose shot slipped through the goalkeeper Craig Hobbs’ hands and trickled into the net.
The game was settled when Craig Hobbs rushed off his line to a through ball, Wilton flicked the ball over the top of him and into the path of Hylton, whose shot from 12 yards went in off the post.
