THE newly formed women’s and girls’ Bristol Phoenix Cricket Club secured their first trophy, just weeks into their first ever season, with a stunning victory in the Europa Cup in Munich, Germany over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Set up by the International Cricket Council to celebrate 100 years of cricket in Europe, the Europa Cup was contested by six teams of Under-17 girls from Austria, Hungary and Germany and the UK over two intensive days of cricket, involving six matches of eight-a-side cricket for all teams.

Bristol Phoenix lived up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites, with six wins out of six starts, beating the German side Oldenberg in the final by six wickets. All eleven players in the squad made major contributions to an incredible string of victories, all based on strong teamwork which allowed individual flair to flourish.

Emily Waldron, with 15 wickets and three cameos with the bat, had an outstanding tournament, whilst Hannah Thompson was awarded the spirit of cricket award, mainly for her willingness to guest for other teams when their players were injured.

Bristol Phoenix was setup over the winter from the women’s and girls sections of three Bristol clubs - Chipping Sodbury CC, Shirehampton CC and Thornbury CC - with a view to promoting women’s and girls’ cricket in the local area.

It has two adult teams and three junior teams, each with a full programme of fixtures for the season.

Bristol Phoenix squad: Lauren Rowles (c), Danika Dyer, Harri Harris, Laura Marshall, Emily Mitchell, Lauren Morris, Hannah Thompson, Rosie Tregear, Emily Waldron, Sophie Williams and Abi Williams.
