OLVESTON-BORN trainer Paul Nicholls insists there has been no “falling out” with Sam Thomas, who has agreed to become stable jockey at Tom George’s Slad yard.

Thomas, 24, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Denman in 2008 and came second to Kauto Star in March, but was criticised by Nicholls last season.

However, champion trainer Nicholls says he will still be using Thomas.

“I said to Sam and Christian Williams a while ago that I wouldn’t be naming a number two this season, as they will both get plenty of rides, as will Harry Skelton,” Nicholls told the Racing Post.

“However, Sam’s job with Tom George is ideal for him and it means that the door here will be opened more for Christian. He will get an awful lot more rides.”

Thomas said: “I’m thrilled to be appointed stable jockey to Tom George.

“He has an exciting team, including a lot of Saturday horses.

“I’ll still plan to ride out when required for Venetia Williams and Paul Nicholls.”

George added: “We’ve raised the profile of our team and it was only right we have a top-class jockey to ride them. Sam is top class.”
