WINTERBOURNE gave their survival hopes a boost with only their second win of the season.
After skipper Ian Rawlings opted to field, Adam Moore collected three wickets in his first four overs with the score on only 11.
A consolidating partnership of 79 between Chris Barker and Lansdown captain Ashley Book took the hosts to 90 in the 30th over before Book (25) holed out to a safely taken catch at deep mid-on by Nick Crane off Jack Dempsey.
Barker (50) unluckily followed nine runs later to a catch down the leg side via the thigh-pad by wicketkeeper Sam Bracey off Dempsey.
Apart from George Wood (17*), all the other lower order batsmen failed to cope with Moore’s pace as Lansdown were bolwed out, seven overs short of their entitlement of 50.
Moore finished with admirable figures of 7-33 and was ably backed up by left-armer Glyn Howell whose miserly spell of 14 overs of spin yielded just 25 runs and 2-33 from Dempsey off eight overs.
Winterbourne lost Keith Ford without scoring, then enjoyed a 39-run second wicket partnership between Steve Paul and Paul Tovey. Tovey (16) was adjudged leg before with the score on 50. Dempsey was bowled for five, but Jon Oakes’ first three scoring shots were fours as he looked to gain the upper hand. At the other end Tovey was continuing his watchful innings, but this was ended by the economical off-spinner Wood, who had him trapped in front for ten from 88 balls. Oakes (47* from 50 balls, including ten fours) survived several hairy moments, before the winning runs came from a bye.
This victory should give Winterbourne renewed confidence as they meet Midsomer Norton this Saturday, who gave them a hiding earlier in the season.
Bristol & Somerset Division 2nd XI Winterbourne (287-7) beat Lansdown (225) by 62 runs
A century from Damian Lingard and a half-century from Matt Crane set the seconds on their way to a comfortable victory at the Rec. The hosts racked up 287 in their allotted overs, with Mike Muston (41) and Paul Dagger (37) all chipping in. Lansdown’s most successful bowler was Shaun Thomas, who recorded figures of 5-60.
In a spirited response, Stuart Dunning made 57 with Dan Williams contributing 39. Marcus Purnell out-bowled his old man, bagging 5-23 from 6.3 overs as the visitors fell 62 runs short.
Adams Exhibitions Ltd Bristol & District Second XI League Division Three YMCA III (83) lost to Winterbourne ‘A’ XI (225) by 142 runs
Four under-15 players starred in this comprehensive triumph at Golden Hill.
Firstly, opener George Ford scored a half-century and was well supported by Mike Norman, who made 43 before being run out.
The target of 225 proved too much for YMCA who folded under good bowling from Norman 3-14 and left-arm seamer Jordan Mayes (3-18), allowing the league leaders to maintain their position at the top of the table with a maximum points success.
Bristol & District ‘A’ XI League Division Two Winterbourne ‘B’ XI (264-7) beat Shirehampton III (198-7) by 66 runs
Another good batting performance laid the foundation for the Winterbourne B’s seventh win of the season.
Opener Alex Heath led the way with 77, assisted by Simon Belsten with 53 and Paul Harris who made 60. A determined Shire side put up a brave fight as they posted two half-centuries from youngsters Helen Ware 50 and an undefeated 60 from Mark Atherton.
This could not prevent them going down by 66 runs, however with three wickets intact, this meant that Winterbourne did not secure full bonus points.
The B team are still at the head of the table.
