LOCAL cricketers came face to face with county cricket stars and came out on top in Chris Taylor’s benefit match at Stone.

The biggest name on show was former England wicket-keeper, Jack Russell, who turned out for his only game of the season in the whites of Gloucestershire alongside current stars such as Alex Gidman, Steve Kirby and Hamish Marshall.

In a Twenty20 match, Gloucestershire batted first and scored 170. Kadeer Ali top-scored with 67, Thornbury player and former Zimbabwe international Anthony Ireland made 31, while Taylor made 17. Tim Lezard (2-20) and Trevor Burley (2-18) took two wickets apiece for Stone select XI.

Burley turned out to be the star of the show as Stone chased down their target with more than an over to spare.

In a display of powerful batting, which included some big sixes, he hit a quick-fire 67 and received good support from Rockhampton batsman Will Tyler, who made a more composed 45.

Stone bowler Lezard said: "We were delighted, once again, to host such a prestigious event.

“Everyone had a fantastic evening and we were chuffed to beat such a strong Gloucestershire side.

“We're very grateful to Chris Taylor and the Gloucestershire players for coming along, for playing the game in such tremendous spirit and for their patience in signing countless autographs for children. We wish Chris all the best for the rest of his benefit season."

All money raised from the event goes to Taylor’s chosen charity for his benefit year, which is Sparks.
