SLIMBRIDGE could have a goalkeeping crisis on their hands going into the first game of the Hellenic League season against Winterbourne United on Wednesday.
Number one Lee Martin is expected to be out for between four to five months after he broke his leg in the pre-season friendly win over Longlevens.
Manager James Cole was due to have a look at a youngster from Hartpury College in Slimbridge’s final friendly against Brimscombe and Thrupp last night – which they won 5-0 - and hopes to have someone in place in time for their new campaign back in Division One West.
Cole has boosted his squad with six signings over the summer, including right back Shane Hanson from Hardwicke and central midfielder Will Freeman from Harrow Hill, while only defender Ian Preece has left Wisloe Road to join Taverners.
Craig Cole and a Marvyn Roberts penalty helped Slimbridge beat Zamaratto League Division One South and West side Cirencester 2-1 on Saturday to follow up victories over Launceston Town, Barnwood United, Longlevens.
With a good pre-season behind them, Cole is confident his outfit can push the top sides in the division this season and has his sights set on the top five.
"If we’re there at Christmas I’d like to go on and win it," he said.
"I’d be very pleased with the top five but we’ve got a big squad, which we need with seven games in the first month.
"I’m very much looking forward to it and looking forward to working with the new chairman (Keith Sparrow). The ambition of the club is to get as high as we can but we need stability - that is the aim.
"We beat a strong Cirencester side and should have won three or 4-0.
"We out battled them and their manager said we should do well.
Slimbridge start with a home game on Wednesday (7.45) but Winterbourne could prove tough opponents having won the league in 2007/08.
Cole said: "They have got a very good side, but all I’m worried about is our side and if we perform as well as pre-season then I will be pleased.
"There’s a good buzz around the club which is needed.
Slimbridge are looking for a goalkeeper with Hellenic / County League experience. Please contact manager James Cole on 07791259872.
