CHRIS DENT’S ICC under-19 World Cup dream ended despite heroics from his Gloucestershire team-mate, David Payne in New Zealand.

Gloucestershire's left-arm seamer again performed with huge credit to take 4-19, but was eventually eclipsed by Jason Holder, a 6ft 7ins fast bowler from Barbados, who claimed 5-18 to put West Indies in the last four at the expense of England at Rangiora.

Even when the West Indies lost their last eight wickets with flailing bats, in seven overs for 29 runs to post a below-par total of 166, England could not mount a challenge.

Young Thornbury batsman Dent thin-edged a waft outside his off-stump as soft dismissals crippled their run-chase from the start and Holder's class ensured there would be no recovery as they were bowled out for 148.

England coach Mark Robinson said: "All I can say is that I'm absolutely proud how this lot have gone about their business and how hard they've worked and how much they've committed.

“Sometimes you come second. Sometimes you just have to hold your hand up."

West Indies go on to a semi-final against Pakistan at Lincoln University, where Pakistan pipped India by two wickets in a 23-over thriller. So England and India meet again in a relatively meaningless consolation match at Hagley Park on Monday.
