GLOUCESTERSHIRE handed a shock debut to 16-year-old Craig Miles against Northamptonshire yesterday.
He had Alex Wakely caught by Chris Taylor at short extra cover for his maiden County Championship wicket, but Northants recovered from 125-5 to reach 381-6 by the close of play.
Ireland international Niall O’Brien – whose brother Kevin signed for Gloucestershire on Tuesday - will resume on 123 not out after sharing a sixth wicket stand of 181 with skipper Andrew Hall (90).
Miles became the fourth youngest player ever to represent Gloucestershire and was given the opportunity after performing well in both 2nd XI and as part of the Gloucestershire Academy.
He also bowled well in his first team debut against Cardiff University earlier this season, taking 3-32.
Miles has been part of the Academy for three years. At the start of this season he signed a three-year-contract with the club; two years whilst completing his education at Filton College and one confirmed full time year after he completes his studies.
Gloucestershire Academy director, Owen Dawkins said: “I am delighted to see another Academy player make his way into the first team.
“Craig has worked hard to deserve his opportunity and has already turned out some very good performance in both Academy and 2nd XI cricket this year.”
Bowling Coach, Stuart Barnes said: “It’s a great opportunity for Craig. He possesses many attributes for fast bowling, he’s tall, moves the ball laterally and thinks well.
“I’m sure he will do well for us, not only in this match but in years to come.”
Cricket Academy director at Filton College, Tim Hancock, said: “It is a very proud moment for Filton College.
“His debut is testament to his hard work and attitude over the last few years and we are very pleased for him.”
