City signed off the 2010/11 season in style with an impressive 3-0 victory at Ashton Gate against a Hull City side that had been unbeaten in their previous 17 away games.
The pre-match build up had rightly centred around this being Steve Lansdown’s last game as chairman and the players responded by giving him the perfect send off in a rousing display.
With Maynard suspended we again showed that, should he leave in the summer, we have two quality strikers in Brett Pitman and Jon Stead who both got on the score sheet.
Pitman is an excellent finisher and finished top goal scorer for us with a very respectable 13 goals to his name in his debut Championship season – two more goals than Maynard managed in his first season with us.
Millen handed opportunities to several youngsters and the pick was right back Joe Edwards, who deservedly won man of the match. We are short on full backs and so his performance could save us a summer signing.
James Wilson also looked solid at centre back and hopefully with injuries behind him could be a ready-made replacement for the departing loanee Steven Caulker.
City have announced that they are in contract negotiations with Maynard and Albert Adomah. The latter has had a very promising first season and it is encouraging to see us try to extend his contract.
Along with Caulker, David James and Marvin Elliott, Adomah has certainly been one of our top performers this season.
Millen will be expected to build on this season’s 15th placed finish. His first objective will be to hang on to Adomah and Maynard.
Then we could do with shifting on a couple of the fringe players such as Lee Johnson and Nicky Hunt and replacing them with real quality.
The full back positions need bolstering and Millen has already spoke of his desire to bring in an attacking midfielder who is skilful with the ball at feet.
The summer will be a big test for Millen and we shall see if he has what it takes to progress the City team in to the top half of the Championship.
