Gloucestershire’s best golfers will head to Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club this weekend for the biggest event of the season.
The Gloucestershire Golf Union Men’s County Championship takes place with the top 30 players progressing to a final 36 holes on Sunday.
The tournament involves the county’s top players.
Chairman of Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club, Brian Tipper, said: “It is a real honour to host this tournament, which is simply the most important event in Gloucestershire’s golfing calendar.
“Stinchcombe Hill is one of the county’s oldest courses with magnificent views across the Severn and the course is at its best at this time of year.”
This is the 13th time Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club has hosted the event, the first such honour having been all the way back in 1909.
The tournament earns World amateur golf ranking points (WAGR) for players taking part.
The first two rounds also feature the Winterbotham Cup Team Championship, where teams of three players from the same club join forces to try and make the English Club Championship.
The winner of the County Championship will represent Gloucestershire at Woodhall Spa later in the year in the Champion of Champions Event.
After the tournament the county captain will be announcing his squad for South West Week at Saunton.
The event is open to the public, who can watch the tournament and follow the players free of charge. Leigh Topping, Chairman of Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club’s Greens Committee, said: “Our team under Howard Cowles have been planning and working hard for a number of months to ensure we have a good test of golf.”
