Gloucestershire powered their way to the National under-20s Championship title with a nine-try thrashing of Hampshire at Twickenham. A long-range penalty from outside half Chris Lewis within 90 seconds and two further penalties in the following eight minutes gave Hampshire a 9-0 lead. Brett Turner kicked a penalty to open Gloucestershire’s account after 11 minutes and two minutes later they were back within a point as Reuben Haile sprinted clear to score wide out.

Hampshire scored next when Myles Roberts-Bailey scored a try, then fellow wing Jaryd Robinson crossed two minutes later. Lewis converted one to put Hampshire 21-8 ahead.

On the half hour Kurt Brown was driven over following an impressive Gloucestershire drive from a lineout. Turner converted. Lewis kicked his fourth penalty before Sam Arnottdarted in from a ruck for a Gloucestershire try. Turner converted. Spencer Sutherland weaved through for a try on the stroke of half-time, Turner again converting to see Gloucestershire ahead 29-24.

After the restart, Hampshire scored first through Lewis’ fifth penalty. Gloucestershire attacked again and Tom Emery was awarded a try. Jack Parsons kicked Hampshire’s sixth penalty. Brown was driven over for his second try and Turner’s conversion eased Gloucestershire 41-30 ahead.

Haile added two more tries, which Turner converted. In injury time Chris Harrington scored between the posts. Turner converted to complete a personal haul of 17 points.
