Dursley and District runner Garry Hughes continued his great string of results with a third place at The Speedy Beaver event.
Finishing in a total time of 01:03:05 in the British Sprint Championships at Belvoir Castle, Hughes qualified for the ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Beijing.
However, he will not compete in the prestigious event in September due to family commitments.
Following the 750m swim, competitors faced a long run to transition where they then completed the rolling one lap 20k bike course and finished with a two lap, 5k run.
Hughes, competing for Tri-Team Gloucester, was 14th out of the water in a time of 11:49.
He improved slightly, finishing 13th on the bike in a time of 32:35, and finished strongly with first place in the run in a time of 16.53.
Three Dursley triathletes travelled to the 2011 TTG Gloucester Sprint, which comprised of a 500m swim, 28k cycle and a 6k run.
It was Mel Williams’ first triathlon for more than eight years and she had a steady run and swim.
However, she was misdirected by a marshal on the bike ride and this added substantially to her final time. Rebecca Topham started with a good swim, continued well on the bike and finished with an impressive run.
Last off for Dursley was Ray Williams. With a good swim, a fast cycle and a steady run he was rewarded with second place in the supervet category.
He was also consistently quick in the transitions as well.
Results: Ray Williams 7.58 (swim), 0.59 (T1), 48.55 (bike), 1.03 (T2), 27.20 (run), 1.26.17 (total); Rebecca Topham 9.32, 1.18, 54.18, 1.31, 26.09, 1.32.51; Mel Williams 13.03, 2.46, 1.06.15, 0.56, 29.43, 1.52.45.
On the same day the slightly shorter Westonbirt Tri took place with a 400m swim, 24k cycle and a 5k run.
The improving Chris Ashworth’s recent training paid dividends, particularly when faced with the windy conditions on the bike, and he finished the race with a good solid run.
Result: Chris Ashworth 9.44, 4.18, 43.58, 2.07, 22.26, 1.22.19.
There was another good turn out for the Pilot series with nine Dursley runners out of the 124 entrants on the night.
The runners found that last month’s course had been slightly short of the advertised four miles, and they also faced a stiff breeze at the start.
This didn’t deter Alice Lewis, who stormed through over four minutes quicker than the first race in May. John Delafield managed to squeeze seven seconds off his previous time.
Paul Wellings was the first Dursley runner home and felt that given the increase in distance that his run was on a par with the first.
Liz Davis, running the Pilot for the first time, ran a creditable 34:04 just ahead of Steve Peers. Results: Paul Wellings 7th 24:56; Dave Wood 16th 26:22; Dave Halford 24th 27:57; John Delafield 27th 28:43; Chris Ashworth 30th 28:53; Rich Clark 35th 29:14; John Spicer 70th 33:11;Liz Davis 82nd 34:04; Steve Peers 85th 34:16. Alice Lewis 116th 40:20.
The club runs from Dursley Rugby Club on Tuesday nights. Meet 6.15pm for 6.30pm.
